Established in 1998 at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA, the Health Geographics Program is the only hospital-based fulltime GIS department in the U.S. The Department is internationally recognized for "pushing the GIS envelope" by applying GIS technology in creative and operations-critical ways in hospital healthcare and "hospital-land" security. The Department received the ESRI "Special Achievement in GIS" Award (2002) and the ESRI "Vision" Award (2004). GIS staff are all Certified GIS Professionals and have over 80 combined years GIS experience in health, environment, spatial statistics, spatial epidemiology, and hospital GIS. Staff experience includes extensive use of GIS in demographics, cancer, injury & cardiovascular epidemiology, hospital facilities, facility siting, healthcare marketing, bioterrorism, and emergency preparedness, planning & support.
